First Meeting

Make the first meeting something that the attendees will want to come back to.

It is reasonable to have a few short meetings "just to decide what we will be and how to organize".  But be careful you don't spend all the group's energy on that stuff with nothing "fulfilling".

Consider a big name speaker.

Some groups want to be "organized", as suggested by some of the items below.  Other groups of people just want "content" (if you want them to come back).

 •    Possible discussion items for the first meeting:

o    Outline APLN (See SharePoint site for Power Point Presentation points that can be used for a meeting that review the history, what and why of APLN).
o    Declaration of Interdependence
o    What is the goal for the Chapter?
o    What type of membership do we wish to achieve?
o    What level and type of visibility do we hope to achieve for the chapter?
o    What are some strategies for achieving these goals?
o    What relationships do we wish to have with other organizations’?
o    Establish recurring meeting time and place
o    Volunteers for setting up and helping with the  next meeting
o    Volunteers for action items that come out from the meeting(s).
o    Tasks that should be discussed or actions to be taken:
1.    Possible create a Chapter Web Site, Wiki, open blogs forums/users group i.e., Yahoo Groups
2.    Determine a consisted  meeting place
3.    Communication of next meeting
4.    Planning next meeting agenda

•    Questions and Thoughts that may need to be researched and discussed by each chapter:

  • Do you need to file paper work with a government agency to be established as a Non Profit Organization?
  • Does the chapter want to charge a membership fee?
  • If a membership fee is to be charged, bank arrangements will need to be considered, possibly including the identification of an official Treasurer and other officers.

Note: Some of these issues are discussed in later sections.  Some of these questions are phrased in such way as implies a specific answer.  Alternate answers might be better for your group.
